What friendslop means, and the games people mean by it
A word that started as an insult, got adopted by the people it insulted, and is now a Steam discovery surface. Here is where it came from, with dates, and what it does and does not describe.
Last checked:
Friendslop is a nickname for cheap, short-session online co-op games where the entertainment comes from the four of you rather than from the game. It was coined as an insult on X on 17 March 2025, was in the games press by that July, and is now used by several of the developers it describes.
Where the word came from
On 17 March 2025 an X user posting as @wooosaaaahhhhh put up the cover art for Lethal Company, R.E.P.O. and Content Warning with the line:
idk how else to describe it but i call this genre of game "Friendslop". its sole purpose of existence is friendfarming
It was a joke, and the author said so once it travelled: "I hope people see the word 'friendfarming' n realize I'm fucking joking LOL". That did not help. The post spread mostly through people arguing with it — the loudest reply, the following day, outscored the original — and by April 2025 the word was being used flatly, as a category name, by people who had never seen the joke.
Know Your Meme documented it on 23 April 2025. Urban Dictionary had a definition up on 1 April 2025 and made it Word of the Day on 10 January 2026. Wikipedia's article was created on 24 November 2025. That is a fast run from shitpost to reference work, and it is the main reason the definition is so loose: nobody agreed one before it was in circulation.
When the press picked it up
The gap between the post and the first serious articles is about four months, and the first two were both arguments against the word rather than uses of it.

Scroll the table sideways on a phone. Every row was opened and read on 24 September 2026. Polygon, IGN, Rock Paper Shotgun, Eurogamer, The Guardian and GamesIndustry.biz all block automated reading, so their coverage is missing from this table rather than absent from the world — and The Verge, the Financial Times, GameSpot, GamesRadar+ and PC Gamer are all reported to have covered it in pieces we could not open to confirm.
What actually qualifies
There is no committee, so this is the list of traits the sources above keep converging on rather than a specification. A game usually needs most of them, not all.
It is cheap
Under twenty dollars, usually under ten. PEAK is $7.99 at list price and R.E.P.O. and Lethal Company are $9.99 — the figures we hold for those three were last checked on 13 August 2026. The price matters structurally: four people have to buy it on the same evening, and the friction of that is what kills most co-op games. Wikipedia's characteristic list puts the ceiling at $20 and that is about right.
A session is short
A run, a shift, a climb. Long enough to go wrong, short enough that going wrong is funny rather than expensive. Games in this shape rarely ask for an evening; they ask for twenty minutes and then take the evening anyway.
Proximity voice chat
Distance-based voice is the single most consistent technical marker, and it is doing more work than the physics is. It turns the map into a social space: you can be too far away to help, you can hear someone panicking one room over, and you can be cut off mid-sentence by dying. Urban Dictionary's first definition put proximity chat in the first line, in April 2025, and it has stayed there.
Failure is the content
The clip that gets posted is never the clean run. Aggro Crab's Caelan Pollock, who co-made PEAK, gave the most useful definition anyone has managed, talking to Dexerto in July 2025: a friendslop game is
something that assumes that you and your friends will make up the difference in comedy and interaction in what the game is lacking
That is the honest version, and it is also the trap. "What the game is lacking" is a design decision when it is deliberate and an excuse when it is not.
It is bad alone
Nearly every source says some version of this. Creative Bloq put it plainly in February 2026: these games are "unsatisfying to play alone even if it's possible". Several do not let you try.
The games people actually name
Counted across the sources in the table above. Three names appear in almost all of them and everything after that is long tail.
| Game | Named by | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| PEAK | Nearly every source | The commercial proof. Four scouts climb a mountain, most of the climbing is arguing. |
| Lethal Company | Nearly every source | Named as the origin more often than anything else. Four people, a quota, a haunted moon. |
| R.E.P.O. | Nearly every source | Six players carry fragile objects out of a haunted house without dropping them. They drop them. |
| Content Warning | One of the original three in the coining post | Film a monster, upload the footage, become briefly famous, die. |
| RV There Yet? | Most of the 2026 pieces | A motorhome, a road, and four people who should not be in charge of either. |
| Big Walk | Several | House House. Walking somewhere together, which sounds like nothing and is not. |
| Chained Together | Several | Literal shared fate — you are on the same chain and so are their mistakes. |
| Among Us | Cited as the retroactive ancestor | Predates the word by seven years and set the template for the voice chat being the game. |
| Phasmophobia | A couple | Older and more of an actual game, which is exactly why the label is contested. |
| Webfishing | A couple | A chat room shaped like a fishing game. Mostly the chat room. |
| Dear Passengers | Kotaku, July 2026 | Unreleased. The worst airline instead of the worst mountain. |
The linked names go to our own dated fact pages for those games — player counts, crossplay, split screen, with sources. Unreleased ones are tracked separately.
Worth noting what is not on that list. Schedule I, Liar's Bar, Buckshot Roulette and Megabonk get called friendslop constantly in comment sections and do not appear as friendslop in any of the sources above. The word travels faster in public than it does in print.
What the label gets wrong
It flattens everything that came after Lethal Company
The A.V. Club's Bee Wertheimer made this argument first, in July 2025: "Every small-scale co-op game released after Lethal Company, including PEAK, is dubbed friendslop, regardless of quality or resemblance." Phasmophobia is on the list despite predating the whole wave and being a considerably more systemic game than any of it. The label has become a release window rather than a genre.
"Slop" is the part developers object to, and they are right
Stuart Gillespie-Cook of House House, who made Big Walk, told Kotaku in August 2026 that slop "has just particular connotations of carelessness, which I don't think any of those games are made with", and then gave away the whole argument in one line: "the second you take out the 'slop,' it's fine. I don't care. It's a genre." His colleague Nico Disseldorp added the part that should end the discussion: "all artists hate the name of the genre. It's a universal."
The investor Binni Erllingsson of Behold Ventures went further in December 2025 and campaigned to retire the word: "'Slop' to me means that something is sloppy, not well done and a bit junky... I feel 'slop' devalues their skill." He is describing a real cost. Whether a word can be recalled once Wikipedia has it is another matter.
It describes the audience, not the game
Aftermath's Jay Castello argued in July 2025 that friendslop is not a category at all but an engagement artifact — a thing that exists because arguing about it performs well. That is uncomfortably close to true. "Cheap co-op game where the voice chat is the point" describes about forty games with nothing else in common: a horror extraction game, a climbing game, a fishing chat room and a walking simulator are not one genre in any sense a designer could use.
And yet it is now infrastructure
Whatever anyone thinks of it, Valve's storefront has absorbed it. There is a Steam franchise hub called Friendslop Games, a curator list built on the word, and an unreleased game called simply Friendslop, by a studio calling itself Friendslop Inc. Once a joke becomes a browse category, arguing about whether it is a real genre stops being the useful question.
Disclosure. This site belongs to L.A. Games, who are making Worst Lifeguards — a four-player online co-op physics comedy, on Steam, unreleased, no date. It is the same shape as the games above and would be described by the same word. Nobody in the press has called it friendslop, because nobody has played it. We are telling you this so you can weigh the rest of the page accordingly, not to sell you anything.
